2015 IN SPORTS

Worth a few thousand words: the best sporting pictures of 2015

No matter the sport and whatever the result, the thrill is in the process. Whether it be on a football field, in a swimming pool or cycling out in the open, all athletes give it their best shot.

The year gone by has been an eventful one in sport. It witnessed the Cricket World Cup, in Australia and New Zealand, with the Aussies beating their co-hosts in the final for their fifth crown.

The FIFA Women's World Cup was a highly successful tournament played out in Canada with Carli Lloyd's half-line goal stunning the Japanese keeper in the final .

The horse American Pharaoh with jockey Victor Espinoza was the first in 37 years to win the Triple Crown.

Serena Williams dominated women's tennis like no other. She was mighty close to a calendar Grand Slam - losing only at the US Open to Italian Roberta Vinci.

Then, of course, there was Ronda Rousey, whose undefeated streak in the world of UFC came to a dramatic end when she was beaten by Holly Holm.

Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao came out for the "Fight of the Century", but alas, it was one-sided in favour of the former.

Last but not least, there was Sepp Blatter, president of FIFA, who along with Michel Platini, head of UEFA, was indicted in a corruption scandal.

But sports is not just about those who pour their heart and soul out on the field. It's also about those who take part from beyond the boundary-line, the fans. And then there are the photographers, the ones who capture the thrill and share it with those who can't watch in the stadium or on television.

We've picked out 20 of the very best sports photographs taken in 2015, and hope they give you an adrenaline rush!
