Resistance breaks: after 139 days, chairman Gajendra Chauhan visits FTII

For 139 days, protests by the students against his appointment as chairman kept Gajendra Chauhan away from the FTII. But on 7 December, he finally set foot on the campus.

Banners of protest had been taken down and slogans of resistance, including quotes from Godard and Tagore, whitewashed off the walls in an attempt to erase any traces of the four month long agitation.

At around 10 am, 25 students, including two women, were arrested as they peacefully protested at the gate to the campus.

Chauhan was accompanied by Anagha Ghaisas, Rahul Solapurkar, Shailesh Gupta and Narendra Pathak - the members of the institute's administrative body, the FTII Society, whose selection had sparked the agitation by the students and the alumni.

These people, the protestors had alleged, lacked merit for their posts and were only appointed for their affiliations with the ruling BJP.

Earlier this week, 17 students who had been involved in the agitation were served a notice by the police.

It read: "On January 7 and 8, Chauhan and members of FTII society will visit the campus. During this, you're advised not to disturb peace on the campus. If you fail to comply with this notice, action will be taken against you under Section 188 of Indian Penal Code."

To ensure Thursday's meeting went on smoothly, police had been deployed on the campus. The police lathicharged the agitating students, bundled many of them into vans and took them to the police station.

Still, the students vowed not to let Chauhan feel comfortable at the FTII. "In the future, we'll continue with our classes, but we don't accept and recognise the society at all," said Ashwini Sharma, a final year student.

"Whenever they come to the campus, we will resist and protest."
