The Ghaziabad police have registered a case of dowry death after the daughter-in-law of Bahujan Samaj Party Rajya Sabha member Narendra Kashyap was found dead with a gunshot injury at her Ghaziabad residence early on Wednesday morning.

A licensed revolver was discovered at the residence. The police filed the charge of dowry death on the basis of a complaint filed by the victim's family. The victim is 25-year-old Himanshi Kashyap who married Sagar Kashyap in 2013. The couple had a one-year-old son.

"The information [about the woman's death] came from the hospital. The family of the victim did not inform the police about this," said Salmantaj Patil, SP City, Ghaziabad. "The incident took place around 10.30 am. We are not sure about the exact timing because we were not informed by the family of the victim. The post-mortem report will be out later tonight or tomorrow morning."

The case of dowry death was registered when the victim's uncle alleged that Himanshi's in-laws had demanded a Fortuner car as dowry, according to The Indian Express.

A senior police officer said: "The family said that the in-laws used to beat her up and say that the Fortuner car was not given to them. They also said that they would assure her that things would become better since they were planning to sell a plot of land so that they could buy the car. The victim had been distressed and went to her family since she was being harassed by her in-laws. This happened in March."

Patil said that at the suspected time of the incident, the victim's in-laws, including the BSP MP, were at their residence. "They claimed that they went looking for her. They found the bathroom door locked. According to them, they broke open the door and found her lying in a pool of blood. They claimed that the victim had used a revolver and shot herself. A licensed revolver has been recovered. It had been kept aside by the family," he said.

He continued: "They claim that they did not hear any gunshot. There are many missing links in this case. We are speaking to her family, which has come to Ghaziabad from Badaun. We will get details of the nature of relationship between the victim and her husband as well as her in-laws. We have to hear what the parents of the victim have to say."
