Russell Brand is in India this weekend, doing shows in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. That's fabulous for fans of irreverent political comedy.
You may think he's silly
And a frivolous A-lister
At the height of his celebrity, when engaged and married to musician Katy Perry, and hosting the MTV Movie Awards, he was often the foul-mouthed belle of the ball.
But he's also many other things, including a sharp voice in Britain's political left
"It's easy to attack me, I'm a right twerp, I'm a junkie and a cheeky monkey, I accept it, but that doesn't detract from the incontrovertible fact that we are living in a time of huge economic disparity and confronting ecological disaster."
"I'm fighting for a system that
- shouldn't destroy the climate
-shouldn't create massive economic disparity
- shouldn't ignore the needs of the people"
"When I was poor and I complained about inequality people said I was bitter, now I'm rich and I complain about inequality they say I'm a hypocrite...."
"Rebel children, I urge you, fight the turgid slick of conformity with which they seek to smother your glory."
Brand brings wit to politics, and serious issues to comedy - all good things.
"My life is just a series of embarassing incidents strung together by telling people about those embarassing incidents."
We hope he brings his politics to our stage and shows how to be incendiary and funny at the same time.
